How to Dress for Outdoor Events Without Carrying a Big Bag

Grab your iced oat milk matcha – or maybe just a giant glass of water because it is getting so warm outside – and let’s get into it. I am currently sitting on my porch, soaking up the afternoon sun, and looking at my calendar for the next few months. It is officially the season of outdoor everything. We are talking farmers markets, outdoor concerts, street fairs, food truck festivals, and just wandering around outside for hours.

I absolutely love this time of year. But there is one major thing that always ruins my vibe when I am out all day. It is the bag situation. Like… why do we do this to ourselves? We put together the cutest, most effortless outfit, and then we ruin the entire silhouette by lugging around a massive, heavy tote bag. It makes your shoulder ache, you end up sweating where the strap crosses your chest, and you are constantly bumping into people in crowded spaces. It is just not a cute look for 2026.

So today, we are going to solve this problem once and for all. I am going to show you exactly how to dress for outdoor events without carrying a big bag. I have spent years perfecting the art of going hands-free, and it honestly changes the way you experience an event. You feel so much lighter and more present.

The Big Bag Disaster (Why We Are Stopping This)

Before we get into the styling hacks, I have to tell you a quick story about why I am so passionate about this. A couple of years ago, me and my cousin went to this huge outdoor arts and music festival. I was so excited. I wore this beautiful vintage slip dress, but I completely panicked about what I might need for the day. I ended up bringing this giant woven straw tote bag. I packed sunscreen, a full water bottle, three different lip glosses, my entire bulky wallet, a portable charger the size of a brick, and a rolled-up sweater just in case it got cold.

Babe, it was a total disaster. Within two hours, the rough straw straps were digging into my bare shoulder and leaving these angry red marks. Every time I turned around in the crowd, I accidentally whacked someone with my giant bag. The worst part was when I tried to buy a lemonade. I set the bag down on the grass to dig around for my wallet, and the whole thing tipped over. My lip gloss rolled away into the dirt, and my expensive sunscreen spilled everywhere. I was sat there in the grass almost in tears because my shoulder hurt and my stuff was ruined.

Right then and there, my cousin – who was literally just carrying her phone and a debit card in her jacket pocket – looked at me and said, “You are carrying too much baggage, literally and figuratively.” We laughed so hard, but she was right. You do not need all that stuff. You need to be free to dance, hold a drink in one hand and a snack in the other, and actually enjoy the weather.

Strategy 1: Chic Utility and Satin Cargos

The absolute best way to ditch the purse is to make your clothes do the work for you. And thankfully, utility wear is having a massive moment right now. But we are not talking about those stiff, heavy khaki cargo pants from the early 2000s. We are talking about elevated, chic utility pieces.

You need to invest in a pair of satin or lightweight linen cargo pants. These are a total game changer. They have those big, deep pockets on the sides of the legs, but because the fabric is soft and flowy, they still look incredibly feminine and high-end. I have this pair of olive green satin cargos that I am completely obsessed with. I wear them with a tight, ribbed white tank top and some comfortable platform sneakers.

The pockets are your secret weapon here. In the right leg pocket, I slide my phone. In the left leg pocket, I put my lip balm and a tiny travel-size sunscreen stick. Because the pants are slightly baggy anyway, the items do not create weird bulges in the fabric. You look like a cool, effortless street-style star, and you do not have to carry a single thing in your hands. It is the ultimate life hack for long days walking around the city.

Strategy 2: The “Secret Pocket” Dress Rule

If you are more of a dress girl, I totally get it. Pants can be annoying when it is ninety degrees outside. But wearing a dress usually means you have absolutely zero storage, which forces you to bring a bag. Well, not anymore.

From this day forward, we are instituting a new shopping rule. If a casual summer sundress does not have pockets, we are leaving it on the rack. I am so serious! Brands are finally starting to realize that women actually need functional pockets, and there are so many gorgeous options out there now.

This trick actually comes directly from my Auntie. She makes the most stunning traditional ribbon skirts for our community events. A few years ago, she started sewing these deep, hidden pockets right into the side seams of the skirts. She told me, “A woman needs her hands free to hug her family and eat frybread, she doesn’t have time to hold a purse.” It is honestly the truest thing I have ever heard. I take that exact energy into my everyday style.

Look for midi or maxi dresses with an A-line skirt. A flowy skirt hides pockets perfectly. You can slip your essential cards and your phone right into the seam, and nobody will even know they are there. Pair your pocket dress with some comfortable leather slide sandals and some big sunglasses, and you are ready for literally any outdoor event.

Strategy 3: The Oversized Linen Button-Down

Okay, let’s talk about layering. Even in the summer, you usually need a light layer for when the sun goes down or if the breeze picks up. Instead of bringing a bulky sweater that you have to stuff into a tote bag, use a strategic outer layer as your “purse.”

My go-to piece for this is a dramatically oversized, 100% linen button-down shirt. You want one that looks like you stole it from a very stylish older man. The key is to find a shirt that has a front breast pocket. This is crucial!

When you are walking around during the hottest part of the day, you wear the linen shirt unbuttoned over a simple crop top and some denim cut-off shorts. You slide your ID and your debit card directly into the front breast pocket of the shirt. It is secure, right against your chest, and super easy to access when you want to buy an iced coffee. If you get too hot, you just tie the shirt loosely around your waist. It adds a really cool, relaxed texture to your outfit, and your cards stay safely tucked away in the pocket. It is so much smarter than carrying a bag.

Strategy 4: The Statement Phone Lanyard

I know some of you are probably thinking, “My phone is huge, it doesn’t fit in my dress pockets!” I hear you. Phones are basically the size of tablets these days. If your outfit genuinely has zero pockets, you still do not need a full purse. You just need a phone lanyard.

Before you picture those ugly corporate lanyards they give out at business conferences, hear me out. Phone lanyards have gotten so incredibly chic. They are basically jewelry now. You can get chunky gold chain lanyards, braided leather straps, or beautiful beaded designs.

I actually bought a handcrafted, fully beaded phone lanyard from an Indigenous artist online a few months ago. It has these gorgeous geometric patterns in turquoise, black, and silver. When I wear it crossbody over a simple black slip dress, it literally acts as the statement accessory for my entire outfit. My phone is totally secure, my hands are free, and most of these modern phone cases have a tiny slot on the back where you can slide your ID and a credit card. It is everything you need in one beautiful piece.

Strategy 5: Ruthless Editing (What You Actually Need)

So, we have figured out the clothing hacks. Now we need to talk about the mindset shift. The reason we carry big bags is because we pack for every single possible emergency. You have to stop doing that. You are going to a street fair, babe, you are not going off-grid in the wilderness.

You have to ruthlessly edit your essentials. First of all, ditch the bulky wallet. You do not need your grocery store loyalty cards and old receipts at an outdoor concert. Buy a super slim, minimalist cardholder. Take your ID, one credit card, and maybe a twenty-dollar bill just in case. That is it.

Next, the makeup. Do not bring a full powder compact and three lipsticks. Bring one tinted lip balm that also has SPF in it. It hydrates your lips, gives you a pop of color, and protects you from the sun. One tiny tube is all you need.

I have a friend who used to be the worst at this. She would bring a massive bag everywhere. We went to a rodeo last summer, and I finally convinced her to just use a cardholder in her pocket. She was so anxious at first! But halfway through the day, she realized how much more fun she was having because her shoulders didn’t hurt and she wasn’t constantly checking to see if her bag was zipped. It is a very freeing feeling once you get used to it.

Strategy 6: The “Micro-Belt” If You Absolutely Must

Okay, I will compromise with you. If you have a medical need, or if you wear contacts and need to bring eye drops, or if you just cannot mentally let go of having a bag, there is one acceptable option. The micro belt bag.

Notice I did not say fanny pack. A fanny pack is bulky and usually made of nylon. A micro belt bag is made of structured leather and is barely bigger than your phone. You wear it looped through your jeans like a literal belt.

It adds structure to your waist, looks like a high-end designer accessory, and holds exactly the three tiny things you need. It does not swing around when you walk, and it does not hurt your shoulder. It is the perfect middle ground between carrying nothing and carrying too much.
