Happy salad season, you guys! I don’t know about you, but around this time of year my fridge turns into a produce drawer explosion, lol!
There’s something about a big colorful bowl that makes me feel like I have my life together, even when I very much do not! Every ingredient just sits there looking pretty until dinner.
Last year there were seven different bowls on that table. The pasta one disappeared first, no contest!
Since warm weather is only a couple of short weeks away, I’ve gathered 20 adorable salad ideas the entire family will love. Don’t fret if you’ve never tossed anything fancier than lettuce and dressing before.
From strawberry spinach to pesto tortellini and a full pasta bar, there’s at least one idea in here you’ll want on repeat. Under each one I’ve added the little details you actually want to know, plus a link to the full step-by-step recipe. Who wouldn’t want that?
SALAD IDEAS
1. Strawberry Spinach Salad Bowl
We’re starting off strong with this strawberry spinach bowl. The berries get sliced thin so every forkful has a little sweetness in it.
Candied pecans go on top for crunch. I’ve had neighbors ask for this one specifically every single June, haha! It’s become a running joke at every cookout.
- The one everyone asks for by name
- Ready in a quarter hour
- Poppy seed dressing does the work
- Berries need to be ripe
2. Southwest Chopped Chicken Salad
This southwest chopped chicken salad is basically a meal disguised as a side. Black beans, corn and crushed tortilla strips make it hearty enough for a Tuesday dinner.
I always end up doubling the chicken because it goes fast! A lime crema drizzle ties the whole thing together.
- Dinner in a bowl, no complaints
- Leftover chicken works fine
- Chips go on right before serving
- Feeds a hungry crowd
3. Roasted Beet Goat Cheese Salad
Roasted beets and goat cheese sound fancy but they come together fast. The beets roast while everything else gets prepped, so there’s barely any active work.
Walnuts add crunch and the tangy cheese balances the earthy beets perfectly. This is the one I bring when I want to look like I tried harder than I actually did, lol!
- Looks fancy, barely any work
- Oven does most of the job
- Balsamic glaze finishes it off
- Great made ahead of time
4. Mediterranean Chickpea Salad Bowl
How cute are these Mediterranean chickpea bowls? Cucumbers, olives, feta and a lemony dressing make every bite taste like a vacation.
Chickpeas make it filling enough for lunch on its own. My leftovers actually survive the fridge for a couple of days, which never happens with salad. That alone makes this one a keeper!
- Tastes like a beach vacation
- No cooking required at all
- Keeps for a couple days
- Lemon juice brightens everything
5. Grilled Peach Burrata Salad
Grilled peaches with burrata is pure summer on a plate! The peaches get charred first, then it all gets piled together.
A drizzle of honey and some basil finish it off. Somebody always ends up hiding a piece for later.
- The peach char makes it
- Grill marks in five minutes
- Honey drizzle is non negotiable
- Best served slightly warm
6. Classic Caesar Green Salad
Is it really a barbecue without a classic Caesar? Not in my book! This green these favorite never leaves the rotation at our house. If you were hunting for green these, this one is a keeper!
Homemade croutons make a real difference here. Shave the parmesan with a peeler for the fanciest looking pile. Even a cheap vegetable peeler works great for this!
- The one that never gets old
- Croutons taste better homemade
- Anchovy paste is the secret
- Ready before the grill heats
7. Kale Avocado Massaged Salad
Massaging kale actually works and it took me way too long to believe it, haha! Rubbing the leaves with a little oil softens them completely.
Avocado adds creaminess without any dressing needed. This one holds up in the fridge better than regular lettuce ever could.
- Softens up in five minutes
- No wilting the next day
- Lemon juice keeps it fresh
- Great for meal prep
8. Spring Mix Herb Salad
This spring mix herb salad is barely a recipe. Fresh herbs mixed right into the greens make it taste way more expensive than it is.
Dill, parsley and mint all work here. I skip a fancy dressing since a simple vinaigrette is really all it needs. Who doesn’t love a good shortcut?
- Barely counts as cooking
- Whatever herbs are on hand
- Ten minutes start to finish
- Dresses up any dinner plate
9. Creamy Bacon Ranch Pasta Salad
Creamy bacon ranch pasta salad is the tray that never survives the first hour at a cookout! Crispy bacon bits go in right before serving so they stay crunchy. If you were hunting for pasta these, this one is a keeper! If you were hunting for pasta these, this one is a keeper!
Rotini holds the ranch dressing in every little groove. I bring this to every single cookout and it never lasts.
- Gone before you get a plate
- Bacon added right at the end
- Rotini holds the sauce best
- Chill it for an hour first
10. Italian Antipasto Pasta Salad
Talk about talent! This antipasto pasta salad looks like something from an Italian deli counter. Salami, mozzarella pearls and pepperoncini make it taste like the whole platter in one bowl.
Italian dressing does all the heavy lifting here. I always make extra because it tastes even better the next day, lol!
- The deli counter in a bowl
- Better the next day
- Mozzarella pearls hold up well
- Pepperoncini adds the tang
11. Pesto Tortellini Pasta Salad
Who doesn’t love pesto, am I right? These tortellini pouches soak up the sauce and taste rich without much effort at all.
Cherry tomatoes and pine nuts finish it off.
- Kids call it the green pasta
- Store bought tortellini works great
- Pine nuts add the crunch
- Serve it warm or cold
12. Watermelon Feta Summer Salad
Watermelon and feta seem like an odd pair until you actually try it. The sweet and salty combo is exactly why this shows up on every summer these list around. If you were hunting for summer these, this one is a keeper!
Mint leaves add a cool finish. My bowl of it never makes it past the first hour at a backyard gathering. People just circle back for more until it’s gone!
- Sweet and salty done right
- Chill the watermelon overnight
- Mint makes it taste fresher
- Feta crumbles best cold
13. Corn Tomato Summer Salad
Corn and tomato together taste like the peak of summer produce. Charring the corn first adds a smoky note that makes this stand out.
This one comes together with barely any dressing needed. I just squeeze lime juice over it and add salt. A pinch of chili powder is great too!
- Tastes like a farm stand
- Char the corn on the stove
- Lime juice is the only dressing
14. Grilled Zucchini Summer Salad Platter
Grilled zucchini on a platter is such an easy side. People always assume it took longer than it did, lol!
A sprinkle of parmesan and fresh basil finishes the whole thing. I’ve served this at parties and let people think I tried harder than I did.
- Fancy looking, zero effort
15. Rainbow Vegetable Salad Platter
Got a bunch of vegetables lying around? This rainbow platter is one of my favorite salad decoration ideas for turning odds and ends into a centerpiece.
Arrange everything by color for the full effect. It gets photographed more than the actual food on the table, lol!
- Turns leftovers into a centerpiece
- Arrange by color for effect
- Whatever vegetables are in the crisper
- Serve with a simple dip
16. Edible Flower Salad Garnish
Edible flowers on a salad turn a regular bowl into something guests photograph before eating. A few pansies or nasturtiums scattered on top do all the work.
They’re available at most farmers markets these days. I buy mine instead of growing them and feel zero shame about it, haha!
- The garnish everyone photographs first
- Farmers market find in spring
17. Creamy Garlic Alfredo Pasta
Creamy garlic alfredo is the ultimate comfort dinner. Heavy cream, parmesan and a generous amount of garlic make a sauce that clings to every noodle.
This is one of those pasta ideas that turns a random Tuesday into something special. My pantry always has fettuccine for this, but honestly any noodle will do. Nobody at my table has ever complained about that!
- Turns Tuesday into something special
- Fresh garlic makes a difference
- Parmesan should be fresh grated
18. One Pot Baked Ziti
One pot baked ziti means fewer dishes and more time on the couch! Everything cooks together, noodles included, so there’s no separate boiling step at all.
Mozzarella gets broiled on top until it bubbles. Not that I’m competitive about cheese pulls or anything, haha!
- One pan, barely any dishes
- Broil the cheese at the end
19. DIY Pasta Bar Setup
Setting up a DIY pasta bar is one of the easiest crowd-pleasing pasta station ideas around for a family gathering. Cook a couple noodle shapes and set out several sauces. Then everyone builds their own bowl.
Bowls of toppings like bacon bits, olives and extra cheese round it out. Honestly that alone makes it worth doing every time!
- Keeps everyone out of the kitchen
- Two noodle shapes is plenty
- Sauces kept warm in a slow cooker
- Toppings set out in small bowls
20. Wedding Pasta Station Display
Last but definitely not least, we have this wedding pasta station display. Tiered trays and little labeled tags make it look like a whole event just for noodles!
Guests line up the same way they would for a dessert table. It’s become one of the most requested setups at every celebration I’ve helped plan. Who wouldn’t want noodles at their wedding?
- Turns noodles into an event
- Tiered trays add height
- Labeled tags help guests choose
- Works for any celebration size
