Planning a first birthday can feel like way too much all at once. There are a hundred theme options, a tight budget and about three weeks to figure it all out.
That is exactly the problem this list is here to fix. No more scrolling through hundreds of pins at midnight wondering what is actually doable, am I right?
I went through pin after pin and kept only the ideas that look amazing but don’t require a degree in party planning. Some are full themes, some are quick photoshoot setups. A couple are card ideas for the birthdays that come later.
Every idea here works in a regular living room or backyard, not some giant rented venue. Budget matters too, so most of these lean on things you already own or can grab cheap!
Use this as a menu, not a rulebook. Mix a theme from one idea with a photo setup from another and call it a day!

Wild One Themed Party Table
We’re starting off strong with the classic wild one setup. Leopard print, tiny gold tassels and a cake stand that looks way fancier than it actually was to make, haha! I found most of these pieces at the dollar store and never told a soul.
The whole table comes together with a good tablecloth and zero shame about where things came from. Nobody needs to know how little you spent! It really is our little secret.

Handmade glitter number cards are one of my favorite 13th birthday card ideas because teens actually keep these. A big glittery number 13 on the front says everything without a single extra word!
Chipboard numbers from the craft aisle hold glitter far better than paper cutouts. This one takes maybe twenty minutes start to finish. Even the messiest crafter can pull this off.

Watercolor Balloons Birthday Card Design
Watercolor balloon cards took me three tries before mine stopped looking like a toddler did it. A loose wash of color in balloon shapes looks intentional even when it is not perfectly neat. I finally added a thin black pen outline once the paint dried.
Suddenly my messy cards looked like I knew what I was doing! A five dollar craft pen basically saved the whole project.

This banner idea is one of the sweetest 1st birthday picture ideas out there. String twelve small photos, one from each month, along a ribbon banner and hang it above the cake. I still catch guests standing there tracking how much the baby changed.

Blue construction trucks make a great pick for a boy who’s already obsessed with anything that has wheels. Caution tape, orange cones and mini dump trucks as centerpieces tie the whole room together. I grabbed the goodie bag trucks in bulk online and they cost almost nothing.
That little truck has survived more bath times than I can count.

Flower crown cake smash photos are timeless for a reason. A soft floral crown against a plain backdrop keeps the focus right where it should be. I learned the hard way that fresh flowers wilt fast in a warm room, so silk ones actually work better, lol!

It worked beautifully and nobody guessed I skipped the studio! Sometimes the cheapest option really is the best one, lol!
Airplane Adventure Cake Smash Shoot
Last but definitely not least, this airplane cake smash shoot rounds out the list of 1st birthday boy photoshoot ideas nicely. Clouds painted on a backdrop, a tiny pilot outfit and a plane shaped cake pull it all together. I made my wispy cloud props from cotton batting in one afternoon.
This one always ends the same way, frosting everywhere and everyone still smiling! Same energy every single time, honestly.
