19 Character Day Outfits for Teachers From Storybook Favorites to Superheroes

Looking for character day outfits for teachers that give you a little more to work with than a costume hat? Think a planet-covered dress, Pete the Cat’s colorful buttons or Miss Honey’s pretty floral outfit.

These ideas include book characters, movie favorites and matching group looks.

You can keep it simple or go all out. Start with a character you love, then decide whether you want a few little accessories or the whole outfit.

Those Rainbow Fish scales are especially cute!

Character day outfit ideas worth saving

planets and an orange bow

We’re starting off strong with this gorgeous planet-print dress. The orange blouse underneath has a big tied bow, which looks so pretty against the dark background and colorful little planets.

Try this combination for a Miss Frizzle-inspired outfit. You could add planet earrings if you want to take the space theme a little further.

red stripes and a pom-pom hat

How cute is this Waldo-inspired look? The red-and-white striped top matches the pom-pom hat and red high-top sneakers.

I especially love that the little dog toy has a matching hat too.

Pair your stripes with black pants, then add dark glasses and a camera prop to follow this outfit.

Pete’s colorful buttons

I am obsessed with this Pete the Cat outfit. The oversized colored buttons down the yellow shirt are so cute, plus those blue cat ears bring everything together.

Wear a blue long-sleeve top underneath and pair it with jeans. Don’t forget the little whiskers if you want to follow this look.

Pippi’s mismatched socks

Who says your socks have to match? This Pippi Longstocking-inspired outfit pairs one green sock with one orange sock beneath a yellow apron-style dress.

The red checked pockets are my favorite part. Try a green tee underneath and finish with two braids and black ankle boots.

Cat in the Hat duo

If you want to dress up with another teacher, this one is for you. Both Cat in the Hat looks start with black outfits, white at the neckline and big red bows.

The tall striped hats do so much here! Add red-and-white socks like the look on the left, or try painted whiskers like the one on the right.

Mary Poppins and her umbrella

This Mary Poppins outfit may just be one of my favorites here. I love the flower-decorated black hat and the little red bow tie over the white collar.

Pair a black jacket with a gray skirt and ankle boots. The patterned bag and bird-handled umbrella are lovely finishing touches.

green stripes and caterpillar eyes

The Very Hungry Caterpillar fans are going to love this! The collage mixes green striped tops with red hats that have big eyes and little antennae.

Choose one striped top as your starting point. If you’d rather skip the shorts shown here, try green trousers while keeping the red character hat.

Junie B. Jones pajama party

How adorable is this pajama look? The pink set is covered in white stars, with a bright blue bow headband and a purple boa adding even more color.

The Junie B. Jones book and gray elephant toy make such a cute pair of props. I’d keep both if you’re recreating this pajama-party version.

Miss Honey’s floral dress

Don’t want to go all out with hats and face paint? This Miss Honey-inspired combination is a lovely choice for simple character day outfits for teachers.

A pale floral dress sits under a sage-green cardigan.

I love the little pendant necklace and ruffled white socks. Carry a few books to follow the look without adding much else.

a dress full of pigeons

This is such a fun way to wear your book choice. The dress features pigeon illustrations, little buses and pastel panels, with a wide black belt around the waist.

The matching book makes the inspiration clear. Add pale blue tights and black strap shoes if you want this same combination.

Rainbow Fish scales

I am obsessed with this Rainbow Fish costume. The overlapping blue, turquoise and purple scales are gorgeous, especially with those shiny silver-colored ones mixed in.

The skirt repeats the same colors above tall black boots. Keep a few sparkling scales in your version rather than making every scale shiny.

Fancy Nancy in pink

If you are looking for lots of accessories, then this one is for you. There’s a pink boa, layered necklaces, a little tiara and even a sparkling bow on the glasses!

I love how the pink ruffles sit above the blue skirt. Purple leggings and glittery pink shoes give this Fancy Nancy outfit even more color.

Dorothy’s checks and red shoes

Those sparkling red shoes are so pretty with the blue-and-white checked dress. This Dorothy collage also includes white puff sleeves, ankle socks and a handled basket.

Tie blue checked ribbons around your braids to bring the look together. You could choose red flats instead if you’d rather skip the heels.

Pooh and friends

How cute is this group idea? The colorful shirts and character ears turn black leggings into outfits inspired by Pooh, Tigger, Piglet and friends.

The orange shirt’s black stripes are a favorite detail. For your own teacher group, let everyone choose a character while keeping the same T-shirt-and-leggings combination.

a rainbow of crayons

Want a group look with lots of color? These crayon outfits match each bright shirt with a wig, a short tutu and colorful socks.

Black leggings run through the whole group.

You could use this idea for a group theme inspired by The Day the Crayons Quit. Pick a different color for each person, then keep the black crayon markings consistent.

Incredibles tees and masks

If you’re looking for a superhero outfit without a full jumpsuit, go with this combination. Red Incredibles tees, black leggings and black eye masks make up all three looks.

The matching red socks and white high-tops are such a cute extra touch. No cape needed!

Alice in blue and white

This Alice-inspired collage is a little different from the classic blue dress. I love the pale blue button-front vest with the white shirt and wide-leg white trousers.

Try the black hair ribbon and black loafers to keep those darker details. The oversized white bow is another option if you want a bigger accessory.

Llama Llama in red

This red pajama outfit is just too cute. The button-front top and matching pants echo the Llama Llama Red Pajama book held at the front.

The little llama toy wears red too! Try two high buns with the rest of your hair left down, like the hairstyle shown here.

a striped tie and a wand

Last but definitely not least, we have this Hogwarts-inspired outfit. The burgundy-and-gold striped tie stands out against a white shirt, black skirt and long black coat.

I love the tall black boots with this combination. Carry a wand to finish it off, or swap the short skirt for black trousers if that suits your school day better.
