20 House Plant Display Ideas for Shelves, Windows and Empty Corners

Looking for house plant display ideas that go beyond another pot on the windowsill? Think trailing vines around your books, little plants on a bar cart or a whole cabinet filled with greenery.

There’s plenty to choose from here, whether you have a small collection or plants in almost every room.

You can keep it simple or go all out. Start with a spot that suits your plants’ light needs, then have a little fun with the pots and pieces around them.

Plant displays worth saving

a little corner stand

We’re starting off strong with this cute tiered stand. I love the long striped leaves spilling over the top beside those patterned pots.

The large leafy plant on the floor makes this little corner feel full without covering every shelf.

Leave a spot for a few small decorations like the red vessels in the middle.

vines above the cabinets

Got an empty space above your kitchen cabinets? The long vines here stretch across the white cabinet tops and trail down the side by the window. It’s such a pretty way to bring green into the kitchen.

If you try something similar, keep the pot accessible for watering and the vines clear of cooking heat.

knotted window hangers

How pretty is this window? The cream knotted curtain and hanging planters are gorgeous together.

I especially love the purple leaves mixed in with all the green.

Try hanging your pots at different heights, then add a row of smaller plants along the sill to follow this look.

greenery on the bar cart

This bar cart may just be one of my favorites here. I love the leafy vines beside the bottles and hanging glasses.

Those colorful framed prints make such a pretty backdrop.

You don’t have to give the whole cart over to plants. Try one trailing pot on top and a smaller patterned planter below.

a tall plant beside the sofa

If you are looking for something simple, this one is for you. A tall plant in a basket sits beside the sofa, with botanical pictures hanging behind it.

The little black table and gold-colored floor lamp leave plenty of room for those broad leaves.

colorful shelf collections

I am obsessed with these shelves. The amber-colored bottles, green ornaments and orange flower shapes look so cute among the plants.

The long zigzag leaves are my favorite part. Try mixing a trailing plant with smaller upright ones rather than filling every shelf with the same shape.

a ladder with little lights

How cute is this ladder display? The striped leaves spill over an upper rung while darker vines hang below.

Those glowing bulb-shaped lights make it even prettier.

For your own version, secure the ladder and hanging pots before adding decorative lights suited to the setup.

a window full of green

Don’t want matching pots everywhere? No problem!

This windowsill mixes pale, dark green and orange-brown planters, with hanging plants filling the space above.

I love the little disco ball tucked into the window. It’s a fun extra detail that doesn’t take up any room on the sill.

side-by-side plant cabinets

If you love a big plant collection, then this one is for you. These black-framed cabinets are filled with long trailing stems, patterned leaves and little pots at different heights.

The lights inside make the pale leaf markings especially easy to see. I’d keep the pots fairly simple here and let those gorgeous leaves have the attention.

a wall of leafy cuttings

Who says your wall display has to be framed pictures? These clear containers show off the roots as well as the leaves.

I love how the green stands out against the gray wall.

Try a staggered arrangement like this with cuttings suitable for rooting in water. Leave enough space to remove each container when it needs cleaning.

a low succulent arrangement

This little arrangement is so pretty. Pale green rosettes sit beside upright, finger-shaped leaves in a long brown bowl, with white pebbles covering the surface.

It’s photographed outdoors, but you could borrow the low centerpiece shape for a suitably bright indoor spot. Choose a planter with drainage rather than relying on the pebble topping.

big leaves around the bathtub

Okay, those huge split leaves are gorgeous! This bathroom goes all out with a large plant beside the tub and smaller pots hanging from a branch overhead.

If you want a simpler version, start with one plant near the window. You can borrow the leafy look without filling the whole space around your bath.

mounted fern gallery

The fern fans are going to love this! Instead of framed prints, this porch wall has plants mounted on boards of different shapes and sizes.

The long branching fronds reach out around the doorway.

For an indoor variation, try one properly mounted fern on a wall with suitable light before building a whole gallery.

vines across a trellis

Want your trailing plant to spread across the wall instead of straight down? This diamond-patterned trellis gives the vines a place to go.

The hanging pot sits off to the left with leafy stems reaching across the open lattice.

I’d leave some of the diamonds showing, just like this.

books and trailing leaves

This is actually one of my favorite displays on the list. The plants trail down both sides of the bookcase, with colorful books and tiny house decorations tucked between them.

You don’t need to clear your shelves to try this. Start with a trailing plant at one end and keep the stems away from the books you reach for most.

hanging trays by the window

I love these little hanging trays with their trailing greenery and bright flowers. The different heights make this window display so pretty.

If you want to try the same idea, use supports rated for the full weight of your watered pots. Keep the longest stems out of the way of window handles.

a miniature greenhouse frame

How adorable is this little white greenhouse? The pitched roof and clear sides give you a different starting point from an open shelf.

This picture shows the enclosure before a finished plant arrangement, so there’s no planted terrarium to copy yet. You could use the idea for a small display after checking which plants suit its light and ventilation.

a console and plant stools

Have a console table with space underneath? This display uses the tabletop for a row of pots and adds stools below for even more greenery.

I love the long striped leaves spilling over the front stool.

The large green-and-blue artwork ties in so nicely. Try keeping your tallest plant at one end if you want a similar arrangement.

vines around the mantel

I am obsessed with this leafy mantel. The vines hang down around the fireplace beneath an ornate gold-colored mirror.

That fine, feathery greenery in the middle is so pretty beside the larger leaves.

Save this idea for a nonworking fireplace. You could keep the mirror and a few decorative vessels while letting the plants fill the space above.

a pot tucked inside a basket

Last but definitely not least, we have a closer look inside a basket display. The dark inner pot sits on a square support below the basket rim.

It’s a useful detail if your pot looks a little lost inside a larger basket.

For a live plant, choose a stable, water-resistant riser and a watertight saucer rather than copying the visible packing support.
