Looking for coat closet storage ideas that leave room for more than jackets? Shoe shelves, little baskets and hooks for bags give you plenty to work with.
These pictures include coat closets plus entryway setups and a few other storage spaces with details you can borrow.
You can keep things simple with an extra rail or plan a whole closet makeover. Start with what you actually need to store, then pick the shelves, hooks and hanging space that suit your things.

Closet and entryway storage ideas to try
open cubbies in progress
We’re starting off with a storage makeover in progress. Tall dividers, wide upper shelves and smaller bottom compartments give this entryway plenty of separate spaces.
The center panel is still being positioned here, so this isn’t a finished setup.
If you’re planning something similar, measure your largest bags and boots before deciding where the shelves should go.
slatted panel with hooks
Don’t want a row of coats taking over your hallway? This narrow slatted panel is a pretty idea to borrow.
Black hooks hold a jacket on the front, with slim shelving visible behind the open panel.

I love how the hooks blend into the darker gaps between the slats.
double rails and side shelves
If you’re looking for jacket closet storage ideas, this empty layout gives you a useful starting point. Two hanging sections sit on the left with a tall stack of shelves on the right.

The picture labels this as mixed clothing storage. For your outerwear, check jacket lengths before copying the double-rail arrangement, or leave one taller section for long coats.
little bench nook
How cute is this little entry nook? I love the dark hooks against the white paneled back.
The brown bench top and dark crates above make it look a little different from an all-white closet.

Try baskets on the side shelves for small accessories, then leave the lower cubbies for shoes.
shoes on one side
The shoe collection gets its own whole section here! Closely spaced shelves fill the left side while jackets hang on the upper right.
The narrow middle cubbies hold hats, folded clothes and a basket.

If shoes keep piling up beneath your coats, borrowing this side-by-side layout could be worth more than adding another hanging rail.
two simple hanging rails
Don’t want to go all out with drawers and cubbies? No problem!
This narrow closet keeps things simple with an upper shelf and two hanging rails.
You could use the lower rail for shorter jackets. Leave enough space between the rails so the upper row doesn’t cover everything below.
baskets beside hat hooks
I love these black open-grid baskets with the little label holders above them. Caps hang nearby while smaller accessories sit inside the baskets.
Give each basket a category, such as gloves or scarves, if you want to try the same arrangement. No need to dig through one big bin.
pegboard by the door
No coat closet near your front door? This pegboard wall gives you another direction to try.
Hats, bags and a long pink garment hang below small display shelves, with a tall rounded mirror at the side.

The little red backpack is such a cute detail. Keep everyday bags on lower pegs if you want them within easy reach.
storage across the door
This one is a cleaning closet rather than a coat closet, but take a look at that door! Shallow baskets and a hanging tool panel use space that could otherwise sit empty.
For an entry closet, you could borrow the door-basket idea for gloves and small umbrellas. Check that the baskets clear your coats and shelves when the door closes.
white cabinets and black rail
This may just be one of my favorite entryway setups here. I love the white cabinet fronts with the brown slatted back and black handles.
A hanging rail sits above the bench with hooks beside it.
If you want both open and closed storage, this gives you a lovely mix. Keep a few everyday jackets out and use the drawers for smaller things.
backpacks above matching baskets
How adorable is this backpack station? Three bags hang above a row of baskets holding bottles and small zippered bags.
Shoes have their own shelves underneath.
Try giving each person a basket beside their usual hanging spot. I’d keep the matching baskets even if the bags above them are all different colors.
tall door baskets
Here’s another door-storage idea, this time in a gift-wrap closet. Long rolls stand in the lower rack while gift bags and smaller supplies fill the baskets above.
You wouldn’t copy the contents for a coat closet, but the different basket heights are worth saving. Choose shallow holders sized for your accessories rather than filling every gap.
blue floral closet back
I am obsessed with this blue floral backing. The green details are so pretty beside the white hangers and shelves.
There’s still plenty of practical inspiration here, with baskets above the rail and shoes below. Try a patterned back if you want your little closet to look just as lovely when the door is open.
storage under the stairs
That sloping space doesn’t have to be one big cupboard. Here, coats hang in the taller left section while shelves and boxes follow the stairs down to the right.
Cleaning tools have a narrow upright slot of their own.
I’d borrow those separate sections for a shared coat and household cupboard rather than letting everything collect beneath the jackets.
hanging space at two heights
This narrow clothing closet has a full upper row with another hanging area below on the left. Shoes sit at the back on the right.
If you’re adapting this for coats, try a shorter lower rail instead of running it all the way across. That could leave a taller opening for longer pieces.
a chest for walking gear
Not everything needs to live inside your coat closet. This open chest shows leads hanging beneath the lid, baskets of pet supplies and folded towels below.
I love the little baskets separating the contents. A nearby storage chest could give dog-walking extras their own spot instead of mixing them in with your scarves.
staggered rails and shelves
If you like seeing everything at once, this open clothing setup has plenty to borrow. The hanging rails sit at different heights, with folded stacks, baskets and shoes on the surrounding shelves.
For a smaller coat closet, you could copy just one section: a high rail for jackets with shoe shelves underneath. You don’t need the whole room.
umbrella stand beside boots
This is a simple detail worth saving. A narrow black umbrella stand fits beside the shoe shelf, keeping the umbrellas upright rather than leaning across the coats.
The boots below sit together on a tray. I’d keep that separate landing spot for footwear instead of filling the entire closet floor.
a shelf for each sports bag
Sports gear needs a home too, right? This small storage nook has separate shelves for bags, clear bins above them and medals hanging along the side wall.
There aren’t any coats in this one. Still, if sports bags keep landing in your coat closet, a dedicated shelf like these could help separate them from everyday outerwear.
caps and bags on the door
Last but definitely not least, we have this little closet with storage from top to bottom. Caps cover the upper part of the dark door, bags hang below and jackets line the rail inside.
I love the open bins above the coats. Borrow the door hooks if you need somewhere for backpacks without giving up the shoe shelves underneath.
