20 Gothic Cupcakes With Black Roses, Skulls and Spooky Details

Looking for gothic cupcakes with black swirls, little skulls or something a bit more romantic? There’s plenty to choose from here.

Think purple roses, crescent moons and black butterflies, plus a few creepy designs if you want to lean into Halloween.

You can keep things simple or go all out with the decorations. I especially love the dark floral ideas.

Save your favorite details as decorating inspiration or bring a picture to your baker.

Gothic Cupcake Ideas Worth Saving

black swirl and striped wrapper

We’re starting off strong with this all-black cupcake. I love the tall frosting swirl and that little hint of purple shimmer near the peak.

If you want to keep your gothic cupcakes simple, take inspiration from this one. A black-and-white patterned wrapper gives it a little extra detail without adding a topper.

black roses and silver sprinkles

How gorgeous are these black rosettes? The frosting curls around the center like rose petals, with silver-colored beads and white circles gathered along one edge.

Keep the decorations off to one side if you want to follow this look. Those dark petals are too pretty to cover completely.

white frosting and red drips

Don’t want to use black frosting? No problem!

This cupcake has a big white swirl with glossy red drips running down the sides. The dark cake underneath gives it that spooky black, white and red combination.

a smiling black bat

How cute is this little bat? That smile makes the whole design feel more playful than scary.

Its wide black wings stretch across a white frosting swirl.

I’d keep the plain black wrapper if you’re trying a similar design. You really don’t need much else here.

little crumb-covered graves

If you love a graveyard theme, this one is for you. The brown crumb-covered tops look like little patches of dirt, with rectangular toppers standing upright behind them.

The white “RIP” lettering is the detail to keep. It makes those simple brown rectangles look like tiny headstones.

black skulls and red splashes

These skull cupcakes take the red-and-white idea a little further. I love how the black skulls sit right in the middle of the pale swirls, surrounded by red drizzles and drops.

Choose plain black liners for your own version if you want the same dark finish around the bottom.

white webs and tiny spiders

The spider fans are going to love this! White webs spread across glossy dark tops, with a little brown spider sitting on each one.

Those tiny red markings on the spiders are my favorite detail. They add just a touch of color to an otherwise dark design.

purple roses and dark fairies

I am obsessed with this dark fairy look. There’s so much to look at, from the purple roses and pale crescent moons to the detailed wings behind the little figures.

You don’t have to copy every decoration to borrow the idea. I’d choose a purple rose and a crescent moon for a simpler version of this elaborate design.

gold skulls and eyeball roses

Is that an eyeball tucked inside a rose? This set mixes pretty flowers with some properly creepy details, haha!

The gold-colored skulls and white skeleton hands are just as striking.

I especially love the gold-colored edges on the mauve petals. Save that detail if you want a floral design with a spooky twist.

midnight blue crescent moons

This moon design may just be one of my favorites here. I love the pale crescents over all those dark blue swirls, shells and little peaks.

Try a scattering of white and gold-colored sprinkles for a similar night-sky look. There’s no need to make every cupcake’s piping exactly the same.

green frosting and bat wings

If you are looking for something a little bolder, then this one is for you. The green frosting has black lines pulled into pointed web-like shapes, with a small skull between two enormous dark wings.

That green is such a fun change from the black and purple designs. I’d keep it if you’re borrowing this idea.

ravens over red and white

I love these glittery black raven silhouettes above the red-and-white swirls. The red follows the curves of the frosting rather than dripping straight down.

If you’re choosing bird picks for a similar look, keep the rest of the decoration simple. The ravens already give you that lovely gothic detail.

tangled webs and big spiders

These are a little creepier than the tiny spiders above! Large black spider toppers sit over gray frosting, with thin white webbing stretching across the swirls and beyond the wrappers.

I love how messy the webs look. For this design, I’d choose the tangled look over a neat little web pattern.

peach swirls and black cameos

Who says you have to stick to dark frosting? These peach-colored swirls look so pretty under ornate black decorations.

There’s a raised insect, a framed floral design and a pale profile wearing a little witch hat.

That witch cameo is my favorite part. Take inspiration from it if you like vintage details with a Halloween twist.

cookie coffins and white crosses

These little coffin shapes are such a good detail. Dark sandwich-cookie toppers sit at an angle over pale, speckled frosting, with a white cross on each one.

The loose dark crumbs around them finish the graveyard look. I’d leave out colorful sprinkles and keep this one black and white.

red cherries and dark shards

Don’t want skulls or spiders on your cupcakes? No problem there!

This design gets its drama from pale frosting, glossy red drips and bright red cherries.

I love the jagged dark shards around the tops. It’s a pretty option if you want something that feels dark and romantic rather than obviously Halloween-themed.

purple frosting full of eyes

How funny is this little cupcake? White eyes with black centers cover almost the entire purple top.

The mix of big flat circles and smaller rounded eyes makes it look extra playful.

Try different-sized eye decorations if you want that same crowded look. This one definitely leans more cute-creepy than dark and romantic.

dark swirls and silver details

This is one of my favorite dark sets on the list. I love the silver-colored sheen over the black swirls, especially on the feather-shaped decorations and skulls.

The berry-topped versions give you another option within the same look. Mix a few different toppers rather than putting a skull on every cupcake.

black butterflies and pale swirls

These black butterfly toppers are so pretty above the pale frosting. Little silver-colored beads trail down the swirls, with more bright details along the butterflies’ bodies.

If you want to go a step further with the display, try a black cake stand. The patterned pedestal here is a lovely finishing touch.

ravens skulls and tiny cameos

Last but definitely not least, we have these plum and ivory cupcake tops. I love the little cameos framed in black!

The skulls, outstretched wings and raven silhouettes give each one a different design.

The “Nevermore” lettering above one raven is such a fitting detail. Save this set if you prefer flat decorated tops to tall frosting swirls.
