Looking for hand embroidery for beginners inspiration that goes beyond a plain practice hoop? Little daisies, leafy branches and a tiny red heart give you plenty to start with.
These ideas include small motifs plus more detailed designs to save for later.
You can keep things simple or try something more colorful.
Embroidery ideas worth saving
an open leafy wreath
Don’t want to add flowers or lots of different colors? No problem!
This green branch curves around the hoop with an opening on the left. The pointed leaves are so pretty all on their own.

You could leave the middle blank like this or add a small initial.
a rainbow of flowers
I am obsessed with this floral rainbow. There’s red around the outside, purple in the middle and so many little flowers and dots in between.
This is a fuller design to work toward rather than a tiny first project. If you want to borrow just part of it, try one curved row of flowers in your favorite color.

a cabin beneath the mountains
How cute is this little cabin? The yellow windows are my favorite detail beside those tall green trees.
Above them, dark outlines trace the mountain peaks with short lines marking the slopes.
For your own pared-back version, try the mountain outlines first and leave the cabin for another hoop.
a beaded moon and clouds
If you love a little sparkle, this one is worth saving. A gold-colored crescent sits beside pale beaded clouds with small stars scattered around it.

There’s beadwork here as well as a celestial design to borrow. For a thread-only variation, you could keep the crescent and stars without recreating the filled clouds.
smiling red mushrooms
OMG, how adorable are these mushrooms? The little black faces make them so sweet.
Each red cap has raised pale spots with fine lines underneath.
You don’t have to fill a whole hoop with them. I’d choose one smiling mushroom as a small practice motif.
a tiny striped bee
This little bee may just be one of my favorite details here. I love the yellow and black stripes beneath the pale wings.
There’s a purple flower peeking into the bottom of the picture too.

Try a bee beside a flower you’ve already practiced if you want to bring two small motifs together.
blue and teal butterfly wings
The blue and teal pairing is gorgeous in this butterfly. Thick black borders separate the colored wing sections, with pale spots along the outer edges.
Save the full shaded design for when you want more detail. A simpler version could use one blue shade inside the black outline.
a pink floral initial
How pretty is this floral letter? Pink rose-like spirals, tiny flowers and green leaves form a large N. The pink bow at the top of the hoop is such a lovely finishing touch.
Try your own initial with a few flowers placed along its outline. You can leave more space between them if you prefer a less crowded design.
wildflowers on a tote
If you are looking for lots of flower inspiration, then this one is for you. There’s so much to love, from the tall blue blooms to the little red flowers near the bottom.
I especially love the uneven stem heights. Borrow a small group for your own tote instead of starting with the entire arrangement.
a red heart by the pocket
Don’t want to go all out with a big design? This tiny red heart is for you. It sits just below the curved pocket edge beside a round rivet.
Practice a small heart on spare fabric before trying it on your jeans.
a lemon in yellow outlines
This is a pretty way to use outlines without filling every shape. A yellow lemon and wedge sit below a brown branch with green leaves.
The word LEMON appears underneath in large yellow letters.
I’d keep just the fruit and leaves for a smaller version. There’s plenty to like without adding the lettering.
little sprigs on a napkin
I love this tiny botanical detail on the pale napkin. Three brown stems carry small green leaves with pink flowers near the top.
Keep your own motif small and positioned where it will show when the napkin is folded. You don’t need a whole border to make it look pretty.
a floral corner bookmark
Calling all book lovers, how cute is this corner bookmark? The red triangle has a large pale A surrounded by colorful flowers and little pearl-like beads.
For a simpler take, choose your initial and one flower. I’d keep the pale edging because it looks so lovely against the red.
red and white hearts
These hanging hearts show how different the same shape can look. One has nested dashed outlines while another is covered with little white flowers.
If you want to keep the decoration simple, follow the outlined red heart at the bottom left. Save the flower-covered version for when you feel like adding more.
a cactus in a brown pot
This cactus is so cute with its chunky black outlines. The green sections have dark vertical markings and little spines along the edges. A two-tone brown pot sits underneath.
You could simplify your version to one cactus shape while keeping that same green and brown combination.
strawberries and a pale flower
I am obsessed with these little strawberries. The bright red looks so pretty against the pale blue top, especially with those dark green leaves.
The light seed marks and pale pink flower are worth saving for your own version. Try one berry first if you don’t want the full cluster.
pink florals and dashed rows
Love a brighter background? This pink cushion has pale floral motifs and little green details.
I love the tiny dashed rows running across it.
Try contrasting stitch rows over a floral background for a practice piece of your own.
pastel practice rows
Want to try different stitch shapes before choosing a picture? This sampler gives you plenty of inspiration.
There are linked rows, little raised clusters and a row of white daisies along the bottom.
I love the pink, blue and green together. Give each practice row its own color so you can see the different shapes clearly.
a flower sprig on a pouch
Last but definitely not least, we have this sweet little drawstring pouch. The pink and purple buds sit along green stems on the front.
I love the mint-colored ribbon at the top!
A single sprig would be a lovely detail for a small gift pouch. Keep the rest plain if you want the flowers to stand out.
