20 Cake Decorating Techniques and Pretty Ideas to Inspire Your Next Bake

Looking for cake decorating techniques that go beyond a swirl on top? Think pink rosettes, glossy drips and little flowers with layered petals.

These pictures include finished cakes plus a few decorating steps to give you ideas for your next bake.

You can keep things simple or go all out with patterns. I especially love the pastel flowers and colorful frosting patches.

Pick a detail you’d like to practice, or save a whole design to show your cake decorator.

Cake Decorating Ideas Worth Saving

little piped flowers

We’re starting off strong with these super cute flower samples. I love the yellow pointed petals and the tiny centers on the orange flowers.

Each row sits beside a different piping tip.

Try making a little practice sheet like this before choosing flowers for your cake. It’s a lovely way to compare shapes and colors.

pink and peach swirls

How pretty is this? Large pink rosettes sit beside smaller peach swirls, with little white flowers filling the spaces. The pale center stays mostly clear.

If you want to follow this look, gather more of your piping around one side rather than making an even border.

dark glossy drips

If you love a drip cake, this one is for you. The dark topping runs down the pale sides in long, uneven lines while an offset spatula spreads the top.

I’d keep the sides plain like these so you can see every little drip.

white draped folds

I am obsessed with these white folds against the pale pink cake. The long draped decoration gathers beneath a cluster of sparkly round details.

Save this close-up if you want a cake with a ribbon-like detail. Those gently rippled edges are worth pointing out to your decorator.

gold sparkle and a stencil

Want to add a little shine? This decorating step shows a leafy stencil laid over a blue cake, with a gold-colored coating across the top.

The stencil hasn’t been lifted yet, so the finished pattern isn’t visible. For your own version, choose decorating products specifically labeled edible rather than craft glitter.

rows of ombre rosettes

This rosette cake may just be one of my favorites here. I love how the deeper pink at the bottom changes to pale pink, then ivory at the top.

Keep the swirls close together if you want that same flower-covered look.

roses and tiny leaves

If you are looking for lots of flower inspo, then this one is for you. There are large pink roses around the sides, smaller blooms on top and little green leaves tucked between them.

The tiny white flowers are my favorite extra detail. I’d keep a few scattered below the larger roses too.

blue ruffles with gold edges

Don’t want to cover your cake in flowers? No problem!

This white cake has translucent blue ruffles climbing up one side, with little gold-colored edges following some of the folds.

I love the plain white space beside all that blue. You don’t need another pattern here.

a piped basketweave

How cute is this woven pattern? The dusty pink strips cross over one another across the top, with fine ridges running along each strip.

Try practicing the alternating pattern on a flat surface first. The plain cream sides are a pretty pairing if you want to keep the rest simple.

layered white roses

These white roses are so pretty. The close-up shows a broad outer petal being added around a curled center, with more flowers standing on wires behind it.

Save this for the petal shapes rather than a complete flower-making guide. If you use wired decorations, keep the wires separated from the cake with food-safe flower picks.

turquoise to lavender

I love this turquoise and lavender pairing. The colors blend softly around the sides while a tall scraper sits against the frosting.

Don’t want extra flowers or piping? No problem there! This color combination gives you plenty to look at all on its own.

a spoonful of gold

If you’re looking for a shiny finishing detail, save this gold drip idea. The mixture falls from the spoon in a narrow stream, with gold-colored shimmer throughout.

For your own cake, follow a tested edible-drip recipe and check that the shimmer product is labeled edible. A pretty color alone doesn’t tell you that.

swags shells and roses

This is one for anyone who loves lots of piping. The cream-colored cake has layered swags, curled details and rows of shells, with large roses sitting on top.

I especially love the little loops around the upper edge. Choose one border to practice if the full design feels like a lot.

thin frosting and cascading flowers

Don’t want a completely covered finish? This three-tier cake lets brown cake bands show through its thin white frosting.

Blush and cream flowers trail down one side.

The uneven coverage is part of the look here. If you’re planning a similar floral cascade, ask your decorator about cake-safe flowers and placement.

fiery marbled shine

I am obsessed with this glossy marbled look. The red, orange and yellow sweep around the rounded cake in fine streaks and broad swirls.

I’d leave this one without flowers or a piped border. That shiny finish and all those colors are gorgeous on their own.

a piping shape chart

Not sure which piping shape you want to try? This chart groups colorful dots, swirls, leaves and woven patterns beside illustrated tips.

Use it for shape inspiration rather than a guaranteed tip-number guide. Check your own tip manufacturer’s examples before choosing a nozzle for a specific design.

sprinkle-speckled frosting

How cute are those little bits of color? The white frosting is dotted with short rainbow sprinkles while an offset spatula spreads it around the sides.

If you like a less polished finish, you could keep some of those visible spatula marks instead of aiming for perfectly smooth sides.

getting ready to stack

This one is a behind-the-scenes step rather than a finished design. A white rod is being inserted into the top of a pale frosted cake.

If you’re planning stacked tiers, follow a proper support guide for your cake sizes. This single frame doesn’t show the full arrangement of boards and supports.

pastel patches and gold flecks

This is one of my favorite colorful cakes on this list. I love how the pink, blue and pale mint patches overlap, with rough edges and little gold-colored flecks between them.

Try keeping your color patches different sizes if you want that same loose, painted look.

pale swirls on gold

Last but definitely not least, we have these pale gray-blue swirls on a gold-colored cake. The ridged piping curves around part of the top while the center stays clear.

I love this color pairing! You could keep the border as a crescent like the section shown here rather than taking it all the way around.
