20 Cape Cod Front Yard Garden Ideas With Flowers, Paths and Pretty Borders

Looking for cape cod front yard garden ideas with more than a row of shrubs? Think blue hydrangeas, roses over a white gate and little paths tucked between flowers.

These gardens offer plenty to borrow, from classic picket fences to cottage-style borders and smaller planted corners.

You can keep things simple or go all out with color. Start with a spot you’d love to change, then choose plants suited to your light and local conditions. You don’t have to redo the whole yard!

Front yard gardens worth saving

roses along a white fence

We’re starting off strong with this gorgeous white picket fence. I love the pink roses spilling between the posts, with blue hydrangeas and little yellow flowers below.

If you want to try this mix, keep the smaller flowers along the lawn edge so they aren’t hidden behind the taller plants.

hydrangeas and rounded shrubs

The blue, purple and white hydrangeas are so pretty together here. Rounded green shrubs sit in front, with purple flower spikes and tufts of grass along the curved bed.

Try a narrow border of gray pebbles if you like that extra detail between the planting and lawn.

trellises along a narrow bed

Have a narrow strip beside your house that needs a little something? This bed has pink coneflowers, low white blooms and tall black trellises against the siding.

The hanging purple flowers are my favorite part. A basket like this could bring another layer of flowers to a small space.

a rose-covered gate

I am obsessed with this pink rose-covered entrance. The flowers climb up one side and spill across the white arbor, with pale purple blooms beside the gate.

Even the fallen petals look pretty! Keep the cross-braced gate in mind if you’re planning a similar garden entrance.

pastel flowers beside brick

This flower border may just be one of my favorites here. I love the round purple alliums rising above the pink blooms and little white daisies.

For a similar look, repeat pink and purple flowers along your path rather than keeping each color in one separate patch.

blue blooms and curved hedges

If you love blue hydrangeas, this one is for you. Big clusters line the white house, with low clipped greenery wrapping around them and a curved path in front.

The hanging fern at the porch is gorgeous too. I’d keep the flowers mostly blue and white to follow this garden.

purple flowers beside steps

Don’t want to fill every bit of your garden bed? No problem!

This stepped path leaves dark mulch showing between purple flowering clumps, small shrubs and green grasses.

I especially love the larger rocks around the outside. They give the planting a less uniform edge than a straight row of blocks.

tall pink cottage flowers

How pretty are those tall pink flower spikes? They rise above the window into the roof’s backdrop, with white daisies, purple blooms and little yellow flowers below.

This is cottage-garden inspiration rather than a typical Cape Cod house setting. Borrow the layered planting if you want that same flower-filled look beside your own home.

yellow blooms around a lamppost

Bring a little yellow to your front walk with a border like this one. The black-eyed Susans spread beside the black lamppost, with pale purple flower heads closer to the path.

I love how the black shutters and hanging ferns sit behind all that color.

a winding seaside path

This one is more beach garden than front-door planting, but that winding path is worth saving. Flat stepping stones run through pale gravel, with rounded rocks, grasses and silvery-green shrubs along the sides.

To borrow the idea at home, try a loose, curved path through a planted bed. You don’t need an ocean view to use the layout.

a bench tucked into flowers

Who wouldn’t want a little seat among these flowers? I love the pale purple clematis climbing beside the window and the tall blue blooms next to the bench.

The house has a different cottage style, but the seating idea could work in a Cape Cod-inspired yard. Leave a small paved opening in your border for a bench and birdbath.

big leaves by the porch

The flowers are lovely, but those big blue-green leaves might be my favorite part. Yellow-edged hostas sit beside pale hydrangeas, purple spikes and small pink blooms.

There’s plenty to borrow for your porch too. The navy chair cushions and yellow climbing roses make such a pretty pairing.

neat greenery and white flowers

If you’re looking for something a little more orderly, go with a border like this. Tall, narrow evergreens stand behind rounded shrubs, with small white flowers and purple spikes along the front.

Keep some space between your planting groups if you want to follow this less crowded look.

a colorful island bed

Don’t want all your flowers right against the house? This island bed gives you another option.

Burgundy foliage rises at the back, with purple flower mounds and bright yellow-orange blooms around the curved edge.

I love the mix of leaf colors just as much as the flowers here.

a garden chair and little path

This is another pretty way to make room for a seat. A slatted chair and shallow birdbath sit beside an irregular paved path, surrounded by pink coneflowers, yellow flowers and broad blue-green leaves.

The small flowering tree is such a lovely extra touch. Keep the route to your chair clear if you’re trying a similar layout.

purple and white around the edge

Here’s a wider look at a similar island-style planting. I love how the low purple and white flower mounds repeat along the front while the burgundy shrub rises behind them.

You can leave plenty of lawn around a bed like this rather than carrying the flowers across the entire yard.

feathery grass at the corner

Those pale grass plumes are hard to miss! Pink coneflowers, purple spikes and low yellow-green foliage fill the corner below them.

For your own sidewalk corner, choose plants with a mature size that keeps them off the paving and preserves clear views near the street.

ferns and a hanging lantern

Don’t want to add more flowers? No problem there!

This little corner is filled with fern fronds and green-and-yellow leaves, with pale stones around the plants.

The hanging jar lantern is such a cute detail. Try one above a foliage grouping if you want a small decoration without adding another planter.

flowers around a birdbath

How cute is this little birdbath garden? Pink coneflowers and yellow black-eyed Susans surround the bowl, with orange and purple flowers closer to the front.

The hanging feeders and green-roofed birdhouse add even more to look at. You could start with just the birdbath if you’d rather keep your garden accessories simple.

coral blooms by the front steps

Last but definitely not least, we have this colorful front entrance. I love the coral-pink hydrangeas beside the steps and the red flowers hanging above them.

The dark blue door looks so pretty against the red siding. If your house already has a bold color, try flowers in a related shade like this.
