20 Full Sun Flower Bed Ideas With Colorful Borders and Pretty Planting Combinations

Looking for full sun flower bed ideas with a little more color? Think pink flowers beside purple spikes, bright blooms along a fence or a whole border filled with white.

These gardens give you plenty to borrow, with a few container and foliage ideas included too.

You can keep things simple or go all out. Use the pictures for colors and layouts, then check each plant’s sun needs against your climate.

A photo alone doesn’t show how much sunlight a bed gets throughout the day.

Flower beds and sunny garden looks worth saving

pink flowers and silver edging

We’re starting off strong with this gorgeous curved border. I love the pink coneflowers between all those purple flower spikes.

The silver-colored leaves along the front are just as pretty.

Try repeating those three colors along your own bed rather than adding a different color at every turn.

yellow blooms around the rocks

How cute is this yellow and purple pairing? The dark-centered yellow flowers fill the middle, with pale pink blooms and broad green leaves closer to the lawn.

The rocks tucked between the plants are a detail worth borrowing. Check the foliage plants separately before copying this mix into a fully exposed spot.

tall purple spikes and grasses

If you are looking for a border with lots going on, then this one is for you. There are tall purple flowers, upright grasses and pink coneflowers, plus little patches of orange.

I especially love the low white flowers along the lawn. Keep that pale edge if you want to try a similarly colorful mix.

white flowers by the front walk

Don’t want a whole rainbow outside your front door? No problem!

This bed sticks mostly to white flowers and green leaves, with rounded shrubs tucked between the larger flower heads.

Borrow the palette rather than treating this as a full-sun planting list. The hydrangeas and variegated hostas need a closer check for your particular exposure and climate.

a bright narrow fence border

This is one of my favorite ways to dress up a narrow strip. The red, orange and yellow flowers run right along the fence, with little purple patches near the straight edging.

If your saved searches are full of “flower bed ideas full sun,” this layout is worth keeping for its use of space. Choose sun-suited plants that fit the strip at their mature size.

pastel rosettes beside the path

I am obsessed with these pink-edged rosettes. The pale green, blue-gray and burgundy leaves look so pretty beside the rounded pebbles.

This is a foliage-led alternative rather than a traditional flower bed. If you want to try it, choose succulents suited to your local temperatures and sun exposure.

pink roses and purple flowers

This rose border may just be my favorite one so far. I love the pink flowers climbing the wall and spilling through the purple planting beside the gravel path.

Try a smaller version with one rose and a low purple-flowering border. You don’t need a whole garden wall to borrow this color combination.

golden grasses and bright blooms

The bright purple spikes are so pretty in this bed! Yellow flowers spread between them while pink coneflowers sit closer to the pale stone edge.

Keep a place for grasses if you like this look. Those tall, tan seed heads are a lovely part of the mix.

purple mounds in a gravel courtyard

Don’t want to fill every inch with flowers? Look no further because this spaced-out courtyard planting is for you. Purple flowering mounds and silver foliage sit in separate groups across the gravel.

I love the large pot beside the bench. A single container could be your extra detail if the rest of the planting stays simple.

a flower-filled mailbox corner

Give your mailbox a little color with a border like this. Pink coneflowers rise above the yellow blooms while airy purple stems spread across the front.

If you recreate the idea, leave room to reach the mailbox and keep the roadside view clear. Let the flowers frame the post rather than cover access to it.

sunflowers beside the porch

The sunflower fans are going to love this! Tall yellow blooms stand beside pink hollyhocks, with orange and purple flowers filling the little bed below.

Try placing your tallest flowers toward the back of a porch border. Check their mature height first so they don’t end up blocking a window you want to keep open.

pink and purple against a dark fence

I love this pink and purple border against the dark horizontal fence. The coneflowers sit among long, branching lavender-colored stems, with small grasses and lower plants near the path.

Repeat a few groups along your fence if you want the same look. Leave room for them to grow rather than copying the close spacing straight away.

purple pom-poms and yellow clusters

How adorable are those round purple flower heads? They’re mixed with flat yellow clusters, white flowers and taller purple spikes along the fence.

The narrow grass path is lovely too. Borrow the flower shapes for your border while keeping the walking route clear.

blue blooms in a curved bed

This is another colorful curved border, but the blue flower heads make it a little different. I love them beside the white daisies, pink coneflowers and yellow blooms.

The blue hydrangeas are worth checking before you copy the planting into all-day sun. You can still borrow the curved outline and blue, purple and yellow palette.

orange flowers in a tall planter

No ground-level bed to work with? This container gives you another option.

The big orange flower heads sit above white blooms and trailing magenta flowers.

I am obsessed with that color combination. Try it in a pot beside your sunny border if you want to carry the flowers onto the patio.

cream plumes and blue-gray mounds

If you’re looking for something without lots of bright flowers, go with this grass-led idea. Tall cream-colored plumes rise above arching green leaves, with rounded blue-gray plants along the front.

The burgundy foliage at the side is my favorite little extra. Check the mature size and local suitability of any ornamental grass before choosing it.

white daisies and purple drifts

I am obsessed with this white and purple border. The yellow-centered daisies look so pretty between the loose purple flower spikes.

You can keep the color choices this simple and still have plenty to look at. Repeat generous groups beside a path if you want to follow this garden’s layout.

orange flowers between big rocks

This is a different way to bring flowers into a gravel bed. Large rocks sit between orange blooms, little white flowers and tufts of narrow green leaves.

I’d keep the orange flowers if recreating this look. They’re such a pretty match for the tan patches in the rocks.

colorful pots along the deck

How cute is this row of planters? Orange, magenta and yellow flower clusters fill the pots beside the railing, bringing the color up off the deck.

These are containers rather than an in-ground bed. Try repeating your border’s colors in a few pots if you want the two areas to feel connected.

fence boxes and yellow flower mounds

Last but definitely not least, we have this pretty white fence with flowers at two heights. I love the burgundy and purple blooms spilling from the mounted boxes.

The narrow bed below has yellow flower mounds with smaller patches of pink and silver foliage. Add a matching ground-level planter if you want to borrow that extra detail.
