20 Flower Bed Border Ideas for a Pretty Garden Edge

Looking for flower bed border ideas that give your blooms a pretty frame? Think curved red borders, little white fences or a simple row of rounded rocks.

These gardens have plenty to choose from, whether you’re planning a narrow strip beside a fence or a bigger bed along the lawn.

You can keep things simple or go all out with colorful mosaic patterns. I especially love the borders with flowers spilling over the edge.

Start with a shape you like, then pick the details you’d want in your own garden.

Pretty borders to try around your flower beds

sweeping red curves

We’re starting off strong with this gorgeous curved border. The reddish rectangular blocks sweep around pink, peach and yellow flowers, with a broad flat row along the top.

I love how the bed bends back toward the fence. Try a similar flowing outline if you don’t want a straight strip across your yard.

pale rocks and purple blooms

How pretty is this purple and white combination? The chunky tan-and-gray edging wraps around white pebbles, purple flower spikes and pointed green plants.

The round orange-brown pots are my favorite extra detail. Set one on its side if you want to borrow that playful look.

a thin rusty-colored curve

If you’re looking for a border that doesn’t compete with your flowers, this one is for you. A slim rust-colored strip follows the lawn, with a band of small pale pebbles just inside it. I love that long, gentle curve.

woven edging and bright flowers

I am obsessed with this little winding bed. The dark woven sides look so cute around those pink, purple and orange blooms.

Instead of making a wide planting area, this design follows a narrow ribbon through the grass. Save this one if you like a garden that feels a little less formal.

a border of white flowers

Don’t want a raised wall around your flowers? No problem!

This bed has a low ribbon of white blooms beside the lawn, with rounded green shrubs and larger white flower heads behind them.

I love the pale edges on those broad leaves. Keep the flowers mostly white if you want to try this same simple color scheme.

green bottle circles

Here’s a border that looks a little different! Upside-down green bottles form a small ring, with their round bases showing above the ground.

The repeated green circles are the detail to save here. If you’re considering this idea, keep breakable edging away from play areas and mower routes rather than copying the mallet setup shown.

a long red-edged flower ribbon

This is another pretty curved border, but the bed is much narrower than the first one. Pink, white and yellow flowers follow the red edging all the way toward the back fence.

Try repeating your favorite flower colors along the length instead of keeping each color in one spot.

weathered log shapes

I love this gray-brown border with all those colorful flowers. The long log-shaped sections have visible grooves and cracks, which look lovely beside the little pink and purple blooms.

Let a few low plants reach toward the edge if you want the same loose, slightly overgrown look.

a framed bed beside the deck

If you like straight lines, this one is for you. A long rectangular frame runs beside the deck railing, with tall purple flower heads rising above smaller white blooms.

The purple flowers repeat down the bed. That’s the detail I’d keep when planning a similar narrow space.

little white pickets

How cute is this tiny fence? The white pointed pickets wrap around a narrow bed of mostly red flowers against a much taller brown fence.

Add black stake lights near the ends if you want to follow this setup. You don’t need a huge flower bed to try this look.

shell shapes along the curve

This border may just be one of my favorites here. I love the pale ribbed shell shapes lined up along the tan blocks.

The pink flowers behind them make it even prettier.

For a similar coastal touch, try a few shell-shaped garden decorations along an existing flat-topped border.

rounded logs beside the path

This is a similar rustic idea to the one above, but the pale rounded sections give it a different look. Their circular ends show beside the path, with a slimmer weathered row behind them.

The big patch of yellow flowers is gorgeous. Pair yellow and purple blooms if you want to borrow the planting colors too.

a low uneven wall

Don’t want every piece of your border to match? No problem there!

This low border mixes pale irregular shapes, with flatter pieces sitting across the top.

The rounded corner is especially pretty beside those upright blue-purple and white flowers. A narrow strip of little pebbles follows the outside edge.

orange scalloped edging

How cute are those scallops? The orange edging has a curved groove beneath each rounded top, with orange and pale paving alongside it.

I’d keep this border visible rather than hiding all those little arches behind trailing flowers.

small rocks and arching grass

If you’re looking for something simple, go with a low row of mixed-color rocks like this one. The big tuft of arching grass is surrounded by blue flowers, purple spikes and little white daisylike blooms.

I love the orange flowers peeking out above it all. There’s plenty of color here without needing a decorative wall.

a rock-filled grid

This raised border gives you so much to look at. Pale and gray rocks fill the square grid, while light pink flowers spill over the top.

The deep red leaves and bright lime-green foliage are my favorite pairing here. Try that color mix if you want something beyond an all-green backdrop for your flowers.

a flat winding strip

Don’t want a tall border and want something a little simpler? This pale, flat strip follows a winding line between the bed and lawn.

A narrow raised row runs along the planting side, so you still get a clearly outlined edge.

a barely-there dark edge

The flowers get all the attention in this little rounded bed. A thin dark border sits close to ground level, with a visible band of brown mulch between it and the white blooms.

Keep some space in front of your plants if you want that same uncluttered outline.

colorful mosaic flowers

I am obsessed with this mosaic border. There are flower patterns, colorful little shapes and even rounded pebble details across the front.

The decoration continues over the top edges too. If you want to go all out, this is such a fun reference for a square raised bed.

big boulders and little pebbles

Last but definitely not least, we have this gorgeous rock-lined curve. Large rounded boulders sit beside red, yellow and purple flowers, with a wide band of smaller pale pebbles on the lawn side.
