Looking for low maintenance flower bed ideas with more than a little greenery? Purple flowers along a path, small beds beside the porch and bright blooms between rocks give you plenty to work with.
There are a few foliage-first ideas here too if you’d rather keep flowers to a minimum.
You can keep it simple or go all out with color. Use these pictures for layout inspiration, then choose plants suited to your sunlight, soil and climate.
A pretty bed isn’t automatically an easy-care one!
Flower bed ideas worth saving
purple flowers along the path
We’re starting off strong with this gorgeous purple border. I love the tall flower spikes spilling toward the gray paving, with pale rounded stones underneath.
Try repeating one suitable flowering plant along your own path rather than squeezing in lots of different varieties. Keep enough space for the grown plants to stay clear of the walkway.
grasses around a curve
Don’t want to fill your border with colorful flowers? No problem!
These rounded grass clumps have pale, fluffy-looking plumes above narrow green leaves. The gray gravel follows the curve of the lawn.

I’d keep the repeated planting if you want this same simple look.
a pebble ribbon and red blooms
How cute is this little fall corner? A ribbon of mixed pebbles winds away from the downspout, with red flowers and a pumpkin beside it.
The dark ground covering makes those colors stand out.
Borrow the pebble shape as a decorative detail, but have the drainage checked before copying the downspout arrangement.
a colorful sidewalk border
If you love lots of color, this one is for you. Red, pink, yellow and purple flowers fill the narrow bed beside the sidewalk.
I especially love the pink blooms hanging over the front edge.

For a simpler version, choose two of these colors and repeat them down the border with locally suitable plants.
purple and yellow between rocks
This may just be one of my favorite color combinations here. The purple flower spikes look so pretty beside those yellow blooms with dark centers. Large rocks sit between the planting groups beside the steps.

Keep a few open spaces around your plants if you want the rocks to remain part of the design.
lime leaves and magenta spikes
I am obsessed with the lime-green tufts in this bed. They look so cute beside the upright magenta flowers and rounded green shrubs.
A taller leafy shrub sits beneath the window, with plenty of dark ground covering visible between plants. Try a similarly spaced layout rather than filling every gap right away.
a leafy fence border
Who says you need lots of blooms? This hosta-filled border has broad green leaves, blue-green clumps and creamy yellow edges all along the fence.
The yellow-centered leaves in front are my favorite part. For a similar look, choose a few hosta varieties suited to your site and give each room to spread.
rose pockets and gravel paths
How pretty are these little rose beds? Pink, red, cream and orange blooms sit in separate stone-edged pockets, with gravel paths winding between them.
The layout is lovely, but the photo doesn’t tell us how much care these roses need. If you want to try it, ask a local nursery for disease-resistant roses suited to your area.
pink blooms and white clouds
I love this mix of pink coneflowers, yellow blooms and tiny white flowers. The taller purple spikes and grasses rise behind them, so there’s something pretty at every height.
Try keeping your lowest flowers near the rounded stone edge to follow this arrangement.
a bed in progress
Here’s a look at the preparation rather than a finished flower bed. Flattened cardboard covers the area beside the house, with bags of mulch resting on top and an existing pebble section left visible.
Save this as a planning reference, not a complete how-to. The photo doesn’t show the finished planting or how the area was prepared underneath.
soft colors around a bench
This is one of my favorite little corners on the list. I love the pale yellow flower clusters and pink blooms in front of the bench.
Tall, narrow grasses frame the seating area.
If you add a bench to your own border, leave a clear route to it. You’ll want to enjoy the flowers without stepping through them.
bright flowers behind big stones
Want a bright border without lots of garden ornaments? Take a little inspo from this one.
Pink, orange and yellow flowers run behind a row of large, uneven stones.
The dark-centered yellow blooms are especially pretty. Repeat a few groups of your chosen flowers to carry the color along a longer bed.
a patchwork of low planting
Don’t want a traditional strip of flowers beside the lawn? This front garden takes a different approach, with low green planting and purple flower patches covering most of the space around the stepping-stone path.

I love the little birdbath beneath the tree. Choose noninvasive groundcovers suited to your yard if you want to try this lawn-alternative look.
flowers around the mailbox
Give your mailbox a pretty backdrop with a mix like this. Pink coneflowers rise above yellow blooms, while airy purple stems spread across the front of the bed.
The white post looks lovely against all that color. Keep your own planting clear of mailbox access and roadside sightlines.
a raised corner with grasses
If you like a clearly defined bed, this one is for you. A low block wall wraps around tall grasses, small shrubs and red and purple flower spikes.
I especially love the shallow birdbath tucked between the plants. The narrow pebble strip outside the wall is another detail worth saving.
a curved bed beside blue siding
The yellow and reddish-pink flowers look so pretty against this blue house. Pale, finely divided foliage breaks up the green, with a red birdbath near the far end.
Try a curved edge like this if you want something a little different from a straight foundation bed. Leave room to reach the house for upkeep.
white flowers and purple spikes
I am obsessed with this white and purple planting. The rounded shrubs and tall, narrow evergreens give it a more orderly look than the loose flower borders above.
Small pale-leaved plants sit along the front between the blooms. To simplify upkeep, choose shrubs whose mature size fits the space instead of relying on frequent clipping.
a small bed beside the deck
Only have a little corner to work with? This curved bed fits white flower clusters, purple spikes and orange-red blooms beside the deck.
The low pink and white flowers along the front are so cute.

Borrow the taller-at-the-back arrangement, but check that your chosen plants share similar light and watering needs.
a tipped pot and tiny garden
Last but definitely not least, we have this playful tiered bed. I love the tipped pot with purple-and-white flowers spilling from its opening!
An upright orange-brown pot sits above it among pink and purple blooms.
There’s even a little gnome beside the rocks. For a simpler version, try just the tipped-pot detail in a small existing bed rather than recreating every tier and decoration.
