Looking for garden design plans that give you somewhere to start? Raised beds, flower-filled borders and little seating corners offer plenty of ideas.
These gardens range from narrow side yards to bigger spaces with room for a lawn, dining area and winding paths.
You can keep things simple or go all out with flowering arches. Start with the layout you like, then choose plants that suit your climate, sunlight and soil.
I especially love the gardens that leave room for a bench!
Garden layouts and planting ideas worth saving
raised beds around a square
We’re starting off strong with this neatly arranged raised-bed garden. The L-shaped beds wrap around a square center bed, with pale gravel paths running between them.
If you want to try a similar layout, sketch your paths first. Leave enough space to move between the beds without stepping into your planting areas.
flowers along the house
How pretty is this border? Pink flowers, purple spikes and little mounds of white and yellow blooms fill the strip beside the house.
I love the tall black trellises against the pale siding.
Try a curved front edge like this one if you want to soften a long, straight wall.
a lawn with places to gather
If you are looking for garden design plans with several places to sit, this one is for you. There’s a dining patio on the left, a lounge area beside the house and another seating spot at the far end.
The curved lawn stays open in the middle. I’d keep that clear center if you’re borrowing this idea for a busy backyard.
arches over raised beds
I am obsessed with these leafy arches. The black frames rise above the rectangular raised beds, with climbing stems reaching across the tops.
The pale stepping slabs are a lovely little detail against the dark gravel. Include a clear walking route like this when you plan your own bed arrangement.
a rock garden in the deck
This may just be one of my favorite details here. A square opening in the deck holds large rocks, little green plants and pale raked lines swirling around them.
There’s a separate seating area behind it with chairs around a round fire pit. You don’t have to copy the whole space to save that little rock-garden idea.

pink purple and yellow borders
The flower lovers are going to love this! Pink daisy-shaped blooms sit beside bright yellow flowers and tall purple spikes.
The big clumps of grass behind them are just as pretty.
For a similar planting scheme, repeat a few colors through the bed rather than giving every section a completely different palette.
a bench beneath the trees
Don’t want to go all out with a big patio? No problem!
This little bench sits beside a winding path, surrounded by ferns, broad leaves and scattered pale flowers.
I love how simple the seat is. The greenery around it is more than enough decoration.
clipped hedges and a gazebo
If you love a neatly shaped garden, then this one is for you. Low hedges outline the beds while rounded shrubs sit along the gravel paths.
A large urn stands in the middle of the flowers.
The seating beneath the pointed gazebo roof is my favorite part. It gives you somewhere to head toward beyond all those pretty green shapes.
an illustrated arched entrance
How lovely is this garden sketch? An arched opening sits in a pale wall, with leafy stems trailing around it and pink, purple and orange flowers beside the path.

If you’re planning a garden entrance, borrow the idea of planting around the opening while keeping the route through it clear.
bright flowers and a wall fountain
I am in love with the deep pink flowers spilling across this white wall. The little wall fountain and rounded pots look so pretty underneath.
An irregular stepping-stone path winds between the flower beds. Try grouping a few pots beside a wall feature if you want a smaller version of this look.
a leafy side-yard path
This narrow side yard has so much to love. Square stepping slabs lead past potted plants and big fern fronds, with a line of glowing bulbs along the fence.
Keep your own path clear of spreading leaves if you try this idea. You can still have plenty of greenery tucked along the edges.
straight rows or circular beds
Can’t decide between straight rows and something a little different? This collage shows both.
The upper garden has long planting beds and upright supports, while the lower layout divides a circle into curved sections.
I’d choose the straight rows for a narrow plot and save the circular idea for a space where you can walk around the outside.
a stream beside the driveway
This is such a pretty alternative to a plain driveway border. A narrow water feature runs between rounded rocks, with grasses and pink and yellow flowers along the sides.
The planting stays in a long strip between the lawn and paving. Save this as layout inspiration rather than assuming it doubles as a drainage system.
a flower-filled bench corner
I am obsessed with this little bench corner. The pink-flowering tree above it is gorgeous, plus there’s a birdbath nestled among the flowers farther forward.
The border curves around the lawn instead of cutting straight across it. Try that curved outline if you want to tuck a seating spot into the end of your garden.

blue and white garden tiers
Have a sloping garden to plan around? This design steps the planting up beside a long staircase.
White flower clusters, blue blooms and fine green grasses repeat across the levels.
I love the restrained colors here. Keep this as a visual reference, then get site-specific advice for retaining walls and steps.
wide steps across the lawn
Don’t want to fill every corner with flowers? No problem there!
This garden pairs wide pale stepping slabs with an open green lawn and leafy planting along the walls.
The single chair on the raised terrace keeps the seating simple too. I’d leave the middle just as uncluttered.
colorful cutting-garden rows
Who wouldn’t want to pick a few flowers here? Long rows of orange, purple and mixed-color blooms run beside a line of sunflowers.
Bare paths separate the planting strips.

If you want a cutting garden, start with a few reachable rows rather than copying the whole plot. Leave room to kneel beside the flowers.
spiky leaves and orange flowers
The orange and purple pairing is so pretty in this garden. I especially love the large pointed rosette beside those low mounds of flowers.
Big rocks sit among the planting rather than forming a continuous edge. For your own version, choose plants with similar growing needs instead of copying the color mix alone.
fruit trees with flowers below
This is another lovely way to arrange a long border. Trees bearing yellow-orange fruit stand in a row, with red and pale purple flowers filling the planting underneath.
The lawn edge stays simple and straight. If you’re trying something similar, allow for the trees’ mature size rather than spacing them by how small they are when you buy them.
pink roses over a narrow path
Last but definitely not least, we have this gorgeous rose-covered walkway. I am obsessed with the pale pink flowers!
Repeated arches stretch along the narrow path between the dark fence and the house.
The black bench tucked under the first arch is such a pretty finishing touch. Keep a little seating recess in your plan if you want somewhere to pause without blocking the walkway.
